For the first time in history, Councilwoman Sharon Tucker takes the position of Indiana’s second most populated city, Fort Wayne’s mayor on April 23, 2024. She will be the first black mayor of the city in history. She took up the seat of late mayor, Tom Henry after his demise in March 2024 due to some medical emergency.

Sharon Tucker is the 2nd woman to serve her tenure as the mayor. She got selected in the 2nd voting round during a democratic caucus while securing 50 per cent of votes plus one or minimum 47. After she sworn as the mayor, her key focus would be improving the lives of residents in addition to the ultimate growth.

While expressing her excitement, she said, “Now you've entrusted in me a heavy job, and it doesn't weigh light on my shoulders. I know that I have a lot of responsibility, and I'm going to need every single one of you.”

She continued, “The biggest thing that I'm concerned about is making sure that we are moving our city forward, continuing the success that we've seen from Mayor Henry, making sure that we are keeping our eye on our communities so that we can improve the quality of life for all of our residents. And that part right now is probably the most important thing to me. And it is a little exciting to be the first lady mayor of the city for more than 11 days.”
